Bull-Leaping Fresco

  • Salon 1, catalog no. 6

  • 1450-1400 BCE

  • Palace at Knossos, Greece

  • Bull-leaping

  • Archaeological Museum, Herakleion

  • This fresco portrays a ceremonial bull leaping with two extraordinarily rich women, portrayed with fair skin, and a young man, with dark skin, who seems to have grasped the bull by the horns and vaulted over its back.

  • I selected this image because I admire the detail of this almost 3 ft tall fresco. To make this with plaster, they had to do section by section before the plaster would dry. So to me, I find it impressive that they could incorporate so much detail.
