Diskobolos

  • Salon 2, catalog no. 2

  • 450 BCE

  • Museo Nationale Romano Palazzo Massimoalle Terme; Rome, Italy

  • Diskobolos (Discus Thrower)

  •  Artist: Myron (A student of Kritios)

  • This sculpture represents the idealized athlete. Classified as a vigorous action statue, Diskobolos is also a sculpture of complete balance. The arch of the arm is balanced by the arch of the body in a very natural way of movement. This sculpture is also extremely detailed to the point of having veins, tendons, and even cuticles prominent.

  • I personally am a huge fan of this piece. This was monumental in the world of sculpture during its time. Gone are the days of sculptures mimicking the pharonic pose from Egypt, and now are the days of movement and emotion portrayed in sculpture.
